How do we treat lactic acidosis?

Lactic acidosis. Severe lactic acidosis (la) is often associated with poor prognosis. Recognition and correction of the underlying process is the major step in the treatment of this serious condition. Intravenous administration of sodium bicarbonate (sb) has been the mainstay in the treatment of lactic acidosis. Dialysis, peritoneal in particular, can also be used in some cases to avoid a massive sb load.

Does food change lactic acidosis levels?

Yes. Many foods are acidic in nature and so anything acidic can make an acidosis worse. Alkaline diets (increasing avocado, kale, spinach, cucumber, celery for example) can help balance and acidic condition. Meats are very acidic, by the way. Read more...

I'm confused, what is lactic acidosis?

Dangerous condition. The body generates energy by breaking down fat and sugar thru a very efficient mechanism that uses oxygen and produces carbon dioxide and water. When this mechanism fails, there is another inefficient back up system that generates lactic acid. Poor blood flow, low oxygen, medications, poisons, excessive exercise can cause this lactic acidosis. It should be corrected promptly. Read more...

Can taking one Metaformin cause lactic acidosis?

Unlikely. Theoretically Metformin can cause lactic acidosis but in setting of normal kidney function it is extremely unlikely. Liver disease and concurrent alcohol use can also increase the risk. Talk to your health care provider if you have any of the above risk factors to determine the risk of lactic acidosis. Read more...

What causes lactic acidosis? Is it from metformin? How to avoid lactic acidosis?

Lactic acidosis. Most cases of type a lactic acidosis are due to marked tissue hypoperfusion in shock or during cardiopulmonary arrest. In type b lactic acidosis, systemic tissue hypoperfusion is not apparent. Metformin therapy for type ii diabetes can cause it, although the likelihood of this is relatively low. Risk factors for this include impaired kidney function and liver disease or concurrent alcohol abuse. Read more...
