In brief: Oral Herpes

Oral herpes is, unfortunately, permanent.
Symptoms, which can come and go, and eruptions may be treated with antiviral medications so that the time of discomfort and pain will be shorter. When you have eruptions the herpes is communicable through contact with the affected areas.

In brief: Yes and no

The herpes virus will permanently be in the nerves in your mouth.
However, you will only have symptoms periodically. An example would be the spot where you get a fever blister on your lip. It reoccurs in the same location. However you do not always have the fever blister. It is possible that you may not have another episode as well.
