Drinking water to excess is seen in some psychiatric patients and now is reported in long distance runners.
Drinking too much leads to low sodium levels which can be fatal. (see reports of "exercise induced hyponatremia) prevention includes using salt containing sports drinks for hydration during prolonged exercise and avoiding plain water during prolonged exercise.

In brief: Water intoxication
Excessive free-water can dilute the electrolytes (especially sodium) in your system and cause major problems.
However, for a normal, healther person, it takes a lot of water to do this. A few years a young woman died from just such a thing. http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-201_162-2358958.html.
