In brief: Avoid the itch
Best to avoid itching the anal area, also known as pruritis ani.
Food items can trigger the itching, caffeine, beer, wine, milk products. Keep the area dry, apply 100% cotton & corn starch to anal area. Avoid excessive scrubbing/cleansing. http://www.fascrs.org/patients/conditions/pruritus_ani/.

In brief: Consider this
You should be checked for pin worms - especially if you're exposed to small children.
Other considerations: hemorrhoids, yeast infection or psoriasis. If just due to diarrhea, that should be addressed. It's always better to deal with the underlying causes. (ps, it's okay to scratch gently when in private).
