Differences in ativan 5mg and Xanax (alprazolam) 1 mg and diazepam 10 mg?

Depends. These antianxiety meds can cause dose related levels of drowsiness or even coma. How someone reacts will depend of his/her metabolic enzyme system. The Ativan (lorazepam) dose should be closer to 1mg for it to be equivalent to the other two meds.
Benzodiazepines. All 3 Medications are for Treatment of Anxiety. The dose of any one of these depends upon Severity of Anxiety. Ativan does not come in 5mg size. It will be harmful to add smaller dose of Ativan to 5mg. Valium 10 mg is a very high dose and can have side effects. Xanax 1mg ids for severe Anxiety They all are habit forming. Discuss with a Psychiatrist to need for medication, side effects; and Therapy.

At hospital, I was given klonopin daily and ativan as needed. My former psych wouldn't allow Xanax (alprazolam) with klonopin. Why the difference?

Possible toxicity. In a hospital, where nurses are observing you and your symptoms, drugs can generally be given more safely than they might be in your own home. Klonopin is a long acting drug which takes a long time to get into your bloodstream/brain, while xanax (alprazolam) and Ativan get in more quickly (and get out quickly too). Use of Ativan or xanax (alprazolam) for "breakthrough" anxiety may be reasonable but may be more toxic to you. Read more...

I know ativan and Xanax (alprazolam) are in the same drug class but what are some of the differences between the 2 drugs?

Ativan vs Xanax (alprazolam) Both Ativan (lorazepam) and xanax (alprazolam) are benzodiazepine tranquilizers. The main differences clinically are that Ativan is longer-acting and slightly more sedating than xanax. Most agree that xanax is more potent than Ativan on a milligram-for-milligram basis, and probably more addictive. However, both are considered high-potency benzodiazepines and both can lead to drug dependence. Read more...

What's your opinion on taking a long acting benzodiazepine bid, in combination with a very short acting one (Xanax, Ativan) prn? I've been on Xanax 2m

Not a good idea. The benzodiazepines such as Xanax or Ativan are addicting. I suggest you speak with your prescriber about alternatives such as behavioral therapy, alternative anxiety meds and serotonergic meds. Read more...
