In brief: Knee pain

Knee pain can be a problem for runners, on a treadmill or outside.
Pain on the outside of the knee can be due to trauma to the lateral collateral ligament or the lateral meniscus, commonly. Both of these can be strained or have small tears in them. Physical therapy can benefit and you should have your physician evaluate you further to be sure you aren't furthering damaging by continuing to run.
