In brief: Flu treatment

If you can see a doctor quickly (within the first 72 hours of symptoms) you can get a prescription for a medication like tamiflu or relenza, (zanamivir) which should shorten the period of symptoms by about 1-2 days.

In brief: Antivirals

If you in fact have influenza there are several effective antiviral medications which if taken in the first day or two of illness may markedly shorten the course of the disease.
More importantly, by limiting the extent of damages due to the "flu" they may also prevent secondary bacterial infections which are a significant cause of deaths due to influenza.
