In brief: Statins and diet

While exercise and dietary changes can certainly impact the ldl, statins are the most widely accepted prescription to truly lower the LDL and decrease the risk for heart disease and stroke.
You can help your cholesterol by raising your HDL but the research is very firm that lowering your LDL is paramount to decreasing your overall risk. Speak with your doctor about the best combination therapies.

In brief: Depends

Depends how high your LDL is.
You could try intensive diet changes which could change your LDL by up to 10%. This would include a low fat diet, lower cholesterol intake, and fish oil supplementation. Exercise has also been shown to increase HDL (good cholesterol) which would help counteract a high LDL level. If these things do not work or your LDL is very high, medication is in order.
