In brief: Get a new gas cap

Breathing petroleum fumes can definitely make you very sick.
However, vehicles are generally very well ventilated and it is unlikely that these fumes will be getting into the passenger compartment. All the same, a new gas cap is a pretty cheap fix from your local parts store.

In brief: Not good

Excess of any gas/fumes beside clean air is not healthy for you.
..So, i would minimize the exposure and get it fixed.
