In brief: A few things

Age is a factor here.
A young person going thru a growth spurt would have increased caloric needs and if these were not met, weight could be lost. On the other hand, if a person increased their activity level this would also increase caloric needs. This again would lead to weight loss if the the new caloric needs were not met. In both cases a person's appetite may increase or stay normal.
