In brief: Scotch tape test

The mother pinworm comes out at night to deposit her eggs outside of the anus.
The best way to test for pinworms is to do the scotch tape test. Early in the morning you apply the sticky side of scotch tape to the anus to pick up the eggs and then affix the tape, sticky side down, to a glass slide. The slide is then analyzed to look for the eggs.

In brief: Usually

Since the eggs are deposited at the anal opening, a piece of adhesive tape is stuck there momentarily and then stuck to a microscope slide so that eggs can be looked for.
