The most common cause would be carpal tunnel syndrome.
The median nerve innervates the thumb, index finger and half the middle finger. It runs into the hand through a tunnel (called the carpal tunnel). If there is a bit of swelling of the tissues or if you bend your wrist while sleeping, the nerve gets pinched and causes numbness. There are some other possibilities, so get checked to be sure.
