In brief: Certainly

Many women with hyperthyroidism do not have a noticeably enlarged thyroid gland.

In brief: Size doesn't matter

;) the function of your thyroid isn't necessarily related to the size of the gland.
..That is, a normal sized gland might be hyperactive (also, an enlarged gland can be hypoactive). A simple blood test can diagnose hypo/hyperthyroidism. See your pcp.

In brief: May begin quietly

Hyperthyroidism in either gender can begin quietly, as an immune malfunction begins causing the gland to put out excessive hormone.
Early on the only signs may be rapid pulse, early fatigue, tremor, loose stools. Over time the gland may swell, but long after your body has had a metabolic war going on between its various parts.

In brief: Absolutely

Absolutely. Many patients with hyperthyroidism dont necessarily have a visibly or palpably enlarged thyroid.
Also there are multiple causes of hyperthyroidism and not all the causes involve an enlarged thyroid.

In brief: No swelling

Not all cases of hyperthyroidism are in cases of thyroiditis.
Some people can't see an enlarged thyroid because of their weight. Hyperthyroidism is a diagnosis made on symptoms and lab tests, not necessarily on thyroid enlargement.
