What is the shelf life of prescription medicine? Does it stop working after sometime or does it just go bad?

In brief: Shelf life of meds
The shelf life has to do with a drug’s quality, and is dependent on storage conditions (exposure to heat, light and moisture, etc).
A drug that has passed its shelf life might be safe to take but may no longer be efficacious. The expiration date of a drug is the date the manufacturers guarantee the safety of a drug, but partly for marketing reasons. Past this date, certain drugs can be dangerous.

In brief: Depends.How vintage?
Be careful. Some medicines like Insulin and Nitroglycerin may not be as strong & you rely on them to control something important, possibly life-threatening.
Also depends on where you store your medicine [a cool dry place ... The opposite of the bathroom medicine cabinet for most folks]. The army found that many meds were good for 2-3 years after date. But ask your pharmacist to be sure.
