In brief: Prevent chronic pain
Shingles can in some cases lead to "post herpetic neuralgia" which is chronic pain at the site of shingles.
Antiviral treatment started within 72 hours of onset of symptoms can reduce the risk of post herpetic neuralgia.

Pain Management
In brief: Extremely important
Antivirals, like valtrex, (valacyclovir) need to be started within 72 hrs of shingle symptoms.
They can decrease the severity and duration of the rash. If pain persists after the rash is gone - postherpetic neuralgia (phn) - it needs to be treated aggressively so it does not last forever. The older you are when you have shingles, the more likely you are to have phn. See a board certified pain specialist for help.

In brief: Very!
Medication can be given to shorten the duration of the outbreak and lessen the chance of post herpetic neuralgia (ongoing pain).
