In brief: Yes
Azithromycin is commonly used, even during pregnancy, for sinusitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, as well as other indications, and is the drug of choice for chlamydia.
Because of it's once daily dosing, patient compliance is much better. Another benefit is that vaginal yeast infections are far less common after a z-pack than after a course of a penicillin or a cephalosporin.

In brief: Choices
The first trimester is critical to avoid any high risk category drugs.
Ultimately, it depends on the organism being treated. In certain areas of the country there is a high resistance to azithromycin, so in short, if we can treat you with a simple penicillin, it's definitely preferred.
