It's not just the symptoms that determine adjustment disorder. This is a fairly mild to moderate and temporary reaction to a stressful situation that doesn't require medications. More important is to rule out more serious depression, anxiety or post traumatic stress disorder that may require more agressive treatment

Key issues are what is happening to cause the problem, and can that be changed? Often the answer to the latter is no or only somewhat, for example, reaction to the death of a parent or loss of a best friend; then symptom treatment may be the only option. Other times, like being bullied, the answer is to intervene at the source of the problem.
