In brief: Less common today

After wide use of the hib vaccine ~1992 we saw a decline in the frequency of this frightening diease.
When prevalent, it mostly affected the infant & toddler & early pre school group. It is still seen occasionally amoung the unvaccinated croud or with different germs involved.I always think of it as a possibility when symptoms match up or involving imigrant groups.

In brief: Almost Never

The vast majority of epiglottis was caused caused by hemophilus influenza bacterium (hib) disease.
This disease has almost been eliminated due to immunization by the hib shot.

In brief: Unusual now

Very rare infection of epiglottis, flap of elastic cartilage tissue covered with mucous membrane, attached to the entrance of the larynx, blocking entrance of food into airway when swallowing.
Since vaccination for hemophilus influenza even rarer. Most common organism causing epiglottitis now is streptococcus pneumoniae. Other organisms include parainfluenzae, varicella-zoster, herpes simplex.
