This is a viral infection which can cause encephalitis ( a brain infection).
Early signs of powassan usually include headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, stiff neck, and sleepiness. In later stages, signs such as respiratory distress, tremors, confusion, seizures, coma, paralysis, and sometimes even death can occur. It is a tick borne disease like lyme. There is no treatment.
