In brief: Sometimes

Usually large gall stones do not pass but do sometimes cause obstruction at the common bile duct with increased pain and sometimes jaundice.
Sludge and gravel are small enough to disappear.A fistula sometimes develops between a gangrenous gallbladder and the duodenum or other parts of the gastrointestinal tract, allowing passage of the stone. If have gallstones and pain surgery usually indicated.

In brief: Yes

Passage of a stone or stones may cause pancreatitis or some jaundice to occur. Overall treatment is still the same - remove thegb and it's contents.
Be sure the bile duct(s) is/are cleared of any stones.
