Could diverticulitis cause a blocked small intestine?

In brief: Only rarely

Inflammation can cause bleeding, blockage or can allow a hole with a leak to occur. This is almost always in the large intestine.
It can cause a big abscess reaction and the reaction of the body to wall this off might trap the small intestine and kink or block it.

In brief: Very uncommon

Diverticulitis is an infection of the colon (large intestine) most commonly in the left lower abdomen.
Only very rarely have i seen the small intestine become adhesed or attached to the infected colon with a kink in the small bowel & cause a small bowel blockage.
