In brief: Angioedema

Angioedema is a very localized area of intense allergic swelling, usually due to an allergy to food or medication.
The importance and nature of treatment depends on the location. Angioedema in the mouth or throat or voice box can be life-threatening if the swelling blocks the airway. Otherwise in most areas of the skin it is just treated with antihistamines or cortisone, depending on severity.
