Look for signs that social communication, including receptive (comprehension) & expressive (verbalizing thoughts) language & nonverbal communication is age-appropriate. Progression: 3 labels @ 12mos, "giant words" @ 16 mos (what'sthat?) , "holophrases" @ 18 mos. (mommy, purse!) & 2-word phrases @ 20 mos., with a 50-word vocabulary. No tv, just read & talk.
