In brief: Gout gives pain!

The main symptom of gout is pain.
Really, really bad pain. Tends to show up first in the big toe, then can spread to other joints in subsequent bouts. It is treatable, but without treatment the repeated bouts of inflammation can lead to more permanent joint damage - gouty arthritis.

In brief: Pain, swelling, red

Ness of the affected joint, with tenderness, coming on suddenly.
It might be activated by an injury or surgery, if there is no previous history of gout. Without proper DX and treatment, it can get flared fairly regularly, and with no treatment can cause the destruction of the joint/bones.
