In addition, if you find that you can not succeed in tapering the Xanax (alprazolam) (the discontinuation syndrome is intense anxiety) you can talk to your doctor about switching to a long-acting anxiolytic such as tranxene to make the taper easier.

See your doctor for guidance.
What i often recommend is cutting total daily dose in half every week until taking 1/2 tab (whatever dose that is) daily, then drop to every other day for about 2 weeks then stop. You still may have some withdrawal symptoms but not as severe.
