Pap itself==<1 min. Obtaining the actual pap smear itself is brief. Prior to getting it the patient must get [comfortably] positioned in stirrups and the physician must insert and open a speculum in the vagina. Additional specimens for sexually transmitted infections are usually obtained. The exam also involves looking at the tissues of the cervix and vagina out to vulva. The speculum is removed for bimanual exam.
Few minutes. A pap smear is a gynecologic test used to screen women for cervical cancer. A doctor will visualize the cervix by inserting a speculum into the vagina, then will use a little brush to take a sampling of cells from in/around the cervix. The entire procedure only takes about 2-3 minutes. Results can sometimes take several weeks, however.
Not long. Taking a pap smear takes less than a minute. The results are usually available in 1-2 weeks depending on the lab.
3 minutes. It only takes a few minutes to actually obtain the swab of material needed for a pap smear but it will take several days to week to have the material analyzed by the lab.
One minute. A pap test is done as part of a routine gynecologic exam. The exam takes longer, but once the doctor is doing a vaginal exam the pap portion takes less than a minute, which involves just a gentle scraping of the inside of the cervix. It can sometimes take a few days to get the results however because it needs to be sent to a pathologist, who will read it and then report back.
