In brief: A combination

The best treatment for most mental disorders is a combination of psychotherapy and medications.
Some disorders do not respond to medication, so in that case you rely on psychotherapy alone.

i always like to start with therapy first and hence the art of medicine.

I always do what I believe is most appropriate for each patient... it may be medications, psychotherapy, marriage counseling, removing precipitating factors, referring to the patient's family physician to evaluate for hyperthyroidism, and so on. That is the science of medicine. The art comes later.

In brief: Psychiatric consult

Psychiatric problems, like general medical illnesses, are treated.
They can't be gotten rid of, unfortunately. As with all general medical conditions, the best treatment starts with a thorough evaluation by a physician. A psychiatrist is the best option for a thorough evaluation and treatment plan. Treatment options follow the assessment--medications and psychotherapy are standard. It works!

In brief: Psychiatric issues

Start with a mental health professional after a referral by your pcp who ruled out medical factors for the symptoms.
The psychiatrist/psychologist/social worker will then assess your condition & discuss proper treatment based on your diagnoses.
