In brief: Depends on the type.
Patients with cutaneous anthrax can be treated as outpatients w/ doxycycline.
However, inhalational anthrax is a very serious condition that requires hospitalization because of its high mortality rate. Patients will require IV antibiotics. They may also need support of heart and lung function due to the detrimental effects of the anthrax toxin on the body. Inhalation anthrax=possible bioterrorism.

In brief: Anthrax Treatment
I recommend you read this cdc guideline: http://wwwnc.
Cdc.Gov/eid/article/14/4/07-0969_article.Htm. The treatment of inhalation anthrax recommendation is a 60-day course of specific antibiotics and 7-10 days for cutaneous disease. Anthrax vaccine is usually also a part of the treatment regimen.
