In brief: If medications fail

If medications fail, meaning the disease is refractor to maximal medical therapy, then a long esophageal myotomy, or cutting of the esophageal muscles can be performed.
This can be performed either thoracoscopically, laparoscopically or a combination of the two.

In brief: Esophageal spasm

The most common cause of esophageal spasm is excess acid from the stomach.
Acid can be treated with otc medications like Pepcid (famotidine) or prilosec. In older patients primary esophageal muscle spasms can occur; these can be treated with a medication called a calcium-channel blocker.
