I have poison ivy. My forearm has gotten red, swollen, and sore. But prednisone really adversely messes with my emotions. Can anything else be done?

In brief: Topical treatment

Cold soaks, potent steroid gel like clobetasol and calamine lotion twice a day will help improve poison ivy.
Make sure there is no superimposed infection. If there are pustules or pain, please see your doctor right away.

In brief: Local treatment

For itching: cool moist cloth, products like zanfel, tecnu are worth trying.
Prednisone not necessary for limited local reactions. If really painful, get checked for secondary infection. Good luck!
