In brief: Sore throat
Sore throat during an upper respiratory infection is due to the damage the infection does to the cells lining the throat.
When they are damaged the nerves in the area react with any activity or motion such as swallowing or coughing, with pain. Symptoms improve with a variable course depending upon the type of infection and the treatment given. Be patient and ask your doctor.
