Are there any approved treatments for fibromyalgia other than lyrica (pregabalin)?

Yes. I do not now if all of these are fda approved, but these are the medications used. Narcotics are never appropriate for fibro. Anti seizure meds like Lyrica (pregabalin) and Neurontin are used. An snri (effexor, cymbalta, or savella) is a mainstay of treatment. Physical activity is very important as well. Physical therapy can be helpful. Muscle relaxants might be used as well. Stay active!
Fibromylgia. There are centers dedicated to fibromyalgia and yes, there are many alternative treatments to help with this disease. You can google fibromyalgia treatment and find lots of usefull resources. Hope it helps.
Yes. ? about "approved treatments" for fibromyalgia (FM). The two other FDA approved meds are Lyrica (pregabalin) & Cymbalta. All three of these medications are non- opiates and modulate parts of the nervous system and brain that sense painful stimuli and transport signal about this information along "pain nerves". Cymbalta is also approved for treatment of depression. .

How effective are lyrica (pregabalin) and tofranil for treating fibromyalgia?

Both can help. Lyrica (pregabalin) has good evidence of benefit for treatment of fibromyalgia in double blinded randomized controlled clinical trials. Imipramine(tofranil) is in the tricyclic antidepressant family. It may also provide benefit for various chronic pain disorders to include fibromyalgia. No one treatment helps everyone and everyone has a different response to treatment, but these are two reasonable options. Read more...
Lyrica, (pregabalin) at times. Lyrica (pregabalin) may be beneficial, but I do not recommend tofranil. Restore sleep directly, reduce stress and consider electroprobe therapy or trigger point injections. Read more...

Is Lyrica (pregabalin) supposed to improve the aspect of pain or the sleep in Fibromyalgia patient?

Theoretically, both. Lyrica (pregabalin) works on the GABA-nergic system (the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the human brain). Pain stimulates the neurons fire at a higher rate than "normal". Lyrica (pregabalin) is supposed to decrease the rate of firing at the neural synapse (thereby reducing the perception of pain). Also, Lyrica (pregabalin) increases slow wave sleep and has some very interesting effects on sleep architecture. Hope that helps! Read more...
Both. The dose of Lyrica (pregabalin) is highly variable. The limiting factor for daytime use is its tendency to put people to sleep. I recommend taking enough during the day to alleviate the nerve pain, and enough at night to get a good night's sleep. Lyrica (pregabalin), like its cousin Gabapentin, is a great sleep-inducer. It's a natural sleep, unlike the benzos. I have one patient on 225 mg 3 times daily. Doing well. Read more...
