In brief: Several weeks

This is very common, and usually takes several weeks to return to normal, but don;t worry, because the distension will go down.
As always, if you think something is really wrong, contact your surgeon. Hope this helps!

In brief: Depends

When you say a distended stomach it could mean that you are not passing gas, it could mean that your bowels are not yet fully working, or that your hernia has recurred.
The colon typically wakes up 72 hours after surgery, but it could take longer. If you are not having bowel movements, and stomach is getting more distended you should see your surgeon soon. Good luck- hernia operations are tough.
