In brief: Crown chord

Don't worry its normal to feel sore for about 24hrs, take tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen, also use warm saltwater and rinse for 1 minute 3-5 x a day.
If the pain increases after 24hrs see your dentist.

In brief: Not at all

This is a normal procedure before taking the impression for the new crown, you can ask to be numb for this if it is uncomfortable to you.
But that is to insure that the new crown would be sealed at the margins.

In brief: Gums sometimes

Are irritated when crowns must be placed slightly below the gum line.
Gums are generally very tough and rebound from cord application very quickly. Please return to your dentist, or at least call them, to report gums that don't resolve in a few days. There could be an issue that needs attention.
