In brief: Floating ribs

There are true ribs (1-8) and false ribs (9-12).
True ribs have direct connections through a cartilage connection to the sternum and false ribs 9 and 10 have indirect connection through cartilage to the xiphoid process (distal extension of the sternum). Ribs 11 and 12 are floating ribs and do not connect to the sternum, they only protect the distal poles of the kidneys. Floating ribs are normal.
