I've ben taking Zoloft (sertraline) and just found out im pregnant. What is a safe anti depressants during pregnancy?
Risks vs benefits. Zoloft (sertraline) is one of the safer choices. The decision to continue certain meds must be on a case by case basis weighing the risks of any mecication vs the risk of not using them. Women with severe depression should continue meds. Others may be able to wean off. Depression can be a serious medical issue. Discuss with your doctor and decide together if you should continue or wean off the medication.
SSRI. There is no safe antidepressant in pregnancy. There is always the balance of risks to the baby and the benefits to the mother. The ssri are dangerous in first trimester when baby internal organs forms and malformations can occur. So if possible avoid ssri in first trimester. Then make sure you keep you appt. To get all fetal screens done .
Does the risk of Zoloft (sertraline) during pregnancy increase as the mg are increased? Is there a safe dose that is greater than 50 mg?
No. To my knowledge, the risks of exposure to a ssri in pregnancy are not dose dependent. 50mg is starting dose for many women. If your doctor recommends you go to 75 or 100mg that should be fine. You can consult. If your psychiatrist is prescribing for you, make sure to discuss with your obstetrician so both physicians are on board with the plan for you. Most docs will rx lowest dose for symptom. Read more...
