How long before I can start exercising after open heart surgery?

Heart Surgery. I ask my patients to walk 10-20 minutes twice daily right away but caution that they are not expected to set land speed records. This should be combined with a cardiac rehab program and increase to one hour twice daily.
Gradually from day 1. Your surgeon will have physical therapy with you to walk, flex, stand etc. Each day you will be encouraged to do more. Light 5 pound weights in the first weeks , then increasing to normal by 2 months can happen, depending on your individual baseline.
