In brief: Trauma
Trauma or injury can involve any part of the ankle mechanism, including skin , subcutaneous( fatty)tissue, nerves , tendons, ligaments and bones.
Most non bone injuries heal reasonably well with immobilization with a splint, plaster cast or boot. X-rays show only bone fractures and if the fracture line is very thin or the two or more pieces of bone are not far apart, the xrays can be negative.
