In brief: Aging

Spondylosis is a degenerative process of the spine that everyone will get as they age.
Disks between the bones of the spine will lose height and bulge out. Facet joints will lose cartilage and grow bone spurs. Ligaments will often get thicker. Spondylosis can start as early as the teenage years, or may not be apparent until the 40's to 50's.

In brief: Aging changes

Wear and tear of the joints in the neck is the cause of cervical spondylosis.
It is not a disease, but rather the effects of daily wear and trauma that occurs of a lifetime that causes these changes. Everyone develops it to some degree. Only some become symptomatic to the degree that requires treatment.
