H/Tap Dr says that "the benefit of omega fish oil supplements is marginal at best". So can we conclude that the jury is still out on it, & eat fish?

Good idea. Fish is a great food to include in your diet and because of all the nutrients you get in fish, superior to omega-3 supplements. Two to three 4 ounce servings of low mercury fish per week is recommended: shrimp, pollock, salmon, canned light tuna, tilapia and cod. Read more...

I'm 21 years old what benefits will taking vitamin B12 pills and fish oil pills do for me? I need more energy. What supplements can I take? Thanks.

Living Life. I know of no physician that would recommend vitamins or supplements to a healthy 21 yo male. Energy comes from being active, getting good sleep unencumbered by alcohol or other drugs. The most accurate advice would also to be living a life that includes very little sugars and regular cardiovascular exercise. One should not assume that pills will give you good health. Good health activities do. Read more...

Just saw a study that showed that fish oil supplements increased risk of prostate cancer. Are the benefits worth the risk? Still recomended?

Faulty reporting. There was a study in which folks diagnosed with prostate cancer had more omega-3's on board; perhaps they were simply more health-conscious, took fish oil tablets / ate fish and got diagnosed earlier. Cause-and-effect makes little biologic sense. The last several studies have shown no cardiac benefit for these supplements; we'd all probably agree that controlling risk factors is far more helpful. Preliminary. The data in this study were very preliminary. Whether or not the patients were taking fish oil supplements was not even measured in the study (only blood levels of omega-3), so there may be multiple other factors that contribute to this increased risk. For example maybe patients who tend to develop prostate cancer also tend to have higher levels for other reasons. More studies are needed. Read more...

Omega 3 fish oil 1000mg. What are the benefits of that food supplement and is there any side effects for it. And do I need medical prescription.

Fish Oil. Fish oil supplies essential omega-3 fats that our bodies cannot make on their own. They can lower triglycerides, prevent heart disease, help reduce high blood pressure, and reduce inflammation in the body. Fish oil helps ward off depression too. In general, most people need at least 1-2 grams of epa and 500mg dha per day in a fish oil preparation. No prescription is needed. Read more...

I read somewhere that fish oil supplements shouldn't be taken by diabetics. Is this true? I was under the impression that omega 3 is good for heart...

Fish oil/ diabetes. I am not sure where you read that. Fish oils have a lot of benefits. They lower triglycerides, have beneficial effects on the heart (decrease arrhythmias, inhibit clotting), they are antiinflammatory. If you do not have any of the above problems, fish oils may not have any direct benefit, but they will not hurt. How about trying to increase your n-3/n-6 ratio through a healthy diet? Read more...
