Chondromalacia is a wearing of the posterior patella cartilage. It is often related to malalignment of the patella or a traumatic injury. It can be improved with specific quad exercises, nsaids and alignment correction with a brace or kinesiotaping.

In brief: Patella problem

Chondromalacia patella of the patella is a common problem where cartilage damage occurs on the posterior aspect of the patella, i is very common in young women active in sports.
Contributing factors include pesplanus, genu valgus and malalignment of the patella. Treatment typically includes ice, nsaids and decreasing activities such as crouching, quad strengthening and surgery if necessary.

In brief: Very common

Chondromalacia patella (runners knee) is due to overload of the patellofemoral joint (knee cap against the end of the thigh bone).
Running causes high forces in this portion of the joint. So does arising from a chair, going up/down stairs. Treatment consists of activity modification, ice, anti-inflammatory meds and therapy aimed at flexibility and strengthening, especially of your core.
