In brief: Stone in bile duct

It is a stone in the tube that carries bile from the liver and gallbladder into the small bowel.
If a stone blocks the tube it can lead to infection, pain, itching , yellow skin color (jaundice ). Note that these same symptoms or signs can be caused by other issues with the biliary system.

In brief: Common duct stone

The liver makes bile, the gallbladder stores it, and the common bile duct drains it into the intestine (duodenum).
Sometimes a stone from the gallbladder ends up in the common duct, or less commonly, a stone forms there after the gallbladder is removed. Depending on the presence or absence of the gallbladder, treatment may be surgical or primarily by gastroenterologists, or a combination of both.
