In brief: Common skin dz

This is a very familiar skin disease that may occur by itself or with the far more severe systemic lupus, though the vast majority of dle patients never get sle.
The disease can look bad and may produce surface scars. Sun avoidance / screens and topical glucocorticoids generally keep it at bay; systemic antimalarials can help.

In brief: Milder form of lupus

Discoid lupus is a milder form of lupus erythematosus, that affects mainly the skin.
However, classical lupus may present as skin lesions and progress to more serious illness.

Discoid Lupus lesions can be seen in systemic lupus erythematosus, but only a small percetnage of people with discoid lupus ever get systemic lupus. Of note in systemic lupus that are a variety of rashes - different in there own- that can be seen and thus diffrent people with lupus can have different types of slesions. People with discoid can have scars and not consider it mild
