In brief: Muscle strain
The most commone back injuries involve muscular injuries to the muscles in the lower back.
Most resolve relatively quickly with rest and conservative treatment. Exercises for strength and flexibility can be helpful to prevent recurrence of these injuries. It is important to differentiate this type of injury from other more serious injuries involving discs and more complicated problems.

But be careful. If your "common" back injury doesn't respond quickly, get it checked out. It might not be as common as you like.

In brief: Hard to do!
Injuries vary greatly in severity and associated symptoms.
Perhaps the most common is low back pain without leg pain or symptoms following an activity. Lifting, bending, twisting, exercise, cleaning home, work activities all can be followed by low back pain. It is very common (60 to 90%) of adults will experience such back pain. Many will improve, but many will develop chronic backache.
