In brief: Asthma

Asthma is caused by a reaction of smooth muscles in your airways which get tight, triggered usually by allergies, but also by chemical irritants like smoke, dust, perfumes, etc.
As the airways get tight, it becomes harder to breath, and coughing becomes pronounced and occurs in spasms. As it progresses, patients become very short of breath and will gasp for air. The need for treatment is urgent.
