In brief: Imbalance

The gardnerella bacteria is present normally in the vaginas of most women.
Change in hormones, vaginal ph, stress, leads to imbalance or xs gardnerella which can cause a thin discharge & odor. The odor can be exacerbated by sexual activity. Onset of BV is also associated w/new sexual partner, although it is not specifically sexually transmitted.
