In brief: Common

Inguinal hernia is very common and modern surgery quite effective and less invasive.
Some pain, bruising and limitation of exercize is reasonable expectation for 4-6 weeks in general other hernias in other places have there own track.

In brief: Depends

Hernia disease is a complex problem and the recovery from the operation depends on the size and location of the hernia as well as the technique of repair. Ask your surgeon to find out more.
It is important to find a surgeon with experience and training in repairing hernias.

In brief: Depends how bad

These days it is usually done with laparoscpes (cameras) and you end up with a small hole in your belly-button and 2 smaller hole on your stomach.
You usually have pain requiring narcotics for 3 to 7 days and then are sore for another week. Most surgeons ask that you not do strenuous activity for 3 to 4 weeks after. Big or trapped hernias may require a larger cut on your belly.
