In brief: Seborrheic Dermatiti

If OTC dandruff shampoo doesn't work, your dermatologist can discuss treatment options wi you. This may include options like Rx strength hydrocortisone, desonide or fluocinolone. Antifunfal shampoo or oral meds, metronidazole, photochemotherapy are some options.

There is some evidence that seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp may be related to chronic vitamin D deficiency as well. Consider reasonable supplementation with 1-2000/day of over-the-counter vitamin D3 in addition to the treatment recommendations from Dr. Fowler above. Do not take higher doses of D without involving your primary doctor in the discussion. Good luck and stay healthy!

In brief: Antifungals

Topical antifungals, such as ketoconazole cream, are the mainstay of treatment.
Other topicals used for this include steroids and dandruff shampoos (selenium or zinc pyrithione). Topical steroids should be avoided on the face, and if absolutely necessary, you should use the lowest strength possible for the shortest amount of time.
