It can serve forever if you take good care of it.
The disadvantage is that if you get a chronic kidney disease, the longevity of having one kidney function is less than that of 2 kidney functions. Not your survival, the kidney function survival is what's at stake if you develop a disease in it. Kidney donors' function survival is excellent because they go through work up to ensure appropriateness.
