I have a pain on the ligament on the outside of my knee. How will I know if it is torn?

In brief: Depends

Assuming this after an injury.
You should be evaluated for stability. If stable you may want to try conservative therapy. If stability is questionable then an MRI should help to guide therapy choice.

While I agree with the answer, we are making an assumption that it actually is the ligament on the outside of the knee. Perhaps the pain is actually the iliotibial band or another structure. I would suggest an exam with the possibility of an mri base on the exam and lenght of symptoms
